Formation time distribution of dark matter haloes: theories versus N-body simulations

چکیده
This paper uses numerical simulations to test the formation time distribution of dark matter haloes predicted by the analytic excursion set approaches. The formation time distribution is closely linked to the conditional mass function and this test is therefore an indirect probe of this distribution. The excursion set models tested are the extended Press-Schechter (EPS) model, the ellipsoidal collapse (EC) model, and the non-spherical collapse boundary (NCB) model. Three sets of simulations (6 realizations) have been used to investigate the halo formation time distribution for halo masses ranging from dwarf-galaxy like haloes (M = 10−3M∗, where M∗ is the characteristic non-linear mass scale) to massive haloes of M = 8.7M∗. None of the models can match the simulation results at both high and low redshift. In particular, dark matter haloes formed generally earlier in our simulations than predicted by the EPS model. This discrepancy might help explain why semi-analytic models of galaxy formation, based on EPS merger trees, under-predict the number of high redshift galaxies compared with recent observations.

PINOCCHIO and the hierarchical build-up of dark matter haloes
We study the ability of PINOCCHIO (PINpointing Orbit-Crossing Collapsed HIerarchical Objects) to predict the merging histories of dark matter (DM) haloes, comparing the PINOCCHIO predictions with the results of two large N-body simulations run from the same set of initial conditions. We focus our attention on quantities most relevant to galaxy formation and large-scale structure studies. PINOCC...
متن کاملAn optimum time-stepping scheme for N-body simulations
We present a new time-stepping criterion for N -body simulations that is based on the true dynamical time of a particle. This allows us to follow the orbits of particles correctly in all environments since it has better adaptivity than previous time-stepping criteria used in N -body simulations. Furthermore, it requires far fewer force evaluations in low density regions of the simulation and ha...
متن کاملOn the physical origin of dark matter density profiles
The radial mass distribution of dark matter haloes is investigated within the framework of the spherical infall model. We present a new formulation of spherical collapse including non-radial motions, and compare the analytical profiles with a set of highresolution N-body simulations ranging from galactic to cluster scales. We argue that the dark matter density profile is entirely determined by ...

We explore fundamental properties of the distribution of low-mass dark matter haloes within the cosmic web using warm dark matter (WDM) and cold dark matter (CDM) cosmological simulations. Using self-abundance-matched mock galaxy catalogues, we show that the distribution of dwarf galaxies in a WDM universe, wherein low-mass halo formation is heavily suppressed, is nearly indistinguishable to th...
متن کاملPredicting the Number, Spatial Distribution and Merging History of Dark Matter Haloes
We present a new algorithm (PINOCCHIO, PINpointing Orbit-Crossing Collapsed HIerarchical objects) to predict accurately the formation and evolution of individual dark matter haloes in a given realization of an initial linear density field. Compared with the halo population formed in a large (360 particles) collisionless simulation of a CDM universe, our method is able to predict to better than ...
